WHAT:
Holding signs at a sidewalk news conference, an attorney and clergy molestation victims will

  • announce two settlement in civil child molestation lawsuits against three abusive Catholic priests,
  • urge anyone who witnessed, suspected or experienced their crimes to come forward, get help, and call police.


They will also prod church officials to

  • publicize the name of one predator whose crimes have never before been publicly disclosed in Missouri, and
  • post the names of all proven, admitted, and credibly accused abusive clergy on their diocesan website.

Outside the chancery (diocesan headquarters) at 300 East 36th Street, Kansas City, MO

WHO:
A Kansas City attorney (who hasn’t spoken publicly about these cases before) and a two clergy abuse victims who belong to a support group called SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAPnetwork.org), including a St. Louis woman who is the organization’s long tme veteran outreach director

WHY:
Last month, KC attorney Sam Wendt settled a lawsuit against Fr. Thomas Reardon and Monsignor Thomas O’Brien for molesting a boy (including inappropriate touching, fondling, and oral sex) at least three times in 1974 at St. Elizabeth’s Church.

SNAP has recently learned that a separate civil molestation case, against Fr. Eugene A. Maio, was settled for a six figure amount last year in California. (A copy of that lawsuit and settlement will be provided.) Maio was named as an accused priest by the Los Angeles Archdiocese

According to the Official Catholic Directory, Maio worked for at least one year (1960-61) at St. Mary’s College in St. Mary’s Kansas (in the Kansas City Kansas archdiocese). He also studied and taught periodically at St. Louis University from the 1950s until 1971. Maio is also believed to have taught at high schools in Colorado and Los Angeles and colleges in Akron and Los Angeles. He now lives in Tallmadge Ohio (near Akron).
