BREAKING THE SILENCE: [Rod Dreher] When the Scorfina family of St. Louistold the archdiocese that the Rev. Leroy Valentine molested their threesons, the Church reached a confidential financial settlement with them,and led them to believe Valentine would never work as a priest again. In fact, the Church reassigned Valentine to a new parish. The Scorfinas are so outraged that today, they break their silence in The New York Times (link requires registration). This is extremely significant: if other past victims decide to ignore the promise of silence made in their settlement agreements with the Church, the stories they'll tell will likely devastate the moral credibility of the American hierarchy
