WHY
Father Terrance Fitzmaurice abused dozens of African American children ranging from ages as young as 10-years-old and older. Fitzmaurice and three other priests gang raped and sodomized Perry Collins when Collins was 10 years old and forced him to engage in oral sex with each of them.
At the time, in addition to being a priest, Fitzmaurice worked in Mayor Daley’s Summere Youth Employment Program.
The victim’s attorney has charged that Archdiocesan officials have refused to reach out to African American victims in a fair and benevolent manner, sometimes refusing to provide adequate funds for their treatment, and acting in bad faith in their dealings with these African American victims.
In addition to Fitzmaurice, other defendants in the suit, which is being filed in US District Court (Eastern District), include the City of Chicago, the Chicago Archdiocese, St. Procopius Abbey, and the Order of St. Benedict. The victim does not know the names of the other three priests involved.
Joining Collins in the suit is his mother and guardian, Doris Thomas. Both Collins and his mother live in Chicago. According to the lawsuit, Collins was “kidnapped from the Douglas Park Playground then forced to ingest alcohol to the point of intoxication,” then raped.
