Sex abuse victims respond to Baptist minister's arrest

What: After a sidewalk press conference, victims of clergy abuse will try to hand deliver a letter to Louisville Catholic officials, urging the new archbishop to:

  • Permanently post on his website the names of all proven, admitted and credibly accused pedophile priests, an
  • Take immediate steps to help law enforcement prosecute a particularly notorious predator priest who was released from prison earlier this month on a legal technicality

When: Saturday, July 28, 10:30 am

Where: Outside the Archdiocese of Louisville office (‘chancery’), 212 E. College Street, Louisville

Who: Three victims of childhood sexual abuse by Louisville clerics and a Knoxville woman who is the regional director of a support group called SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAPnetwork.org)

Why: Earlier this month, former priest Dan Clark was let out of prison because the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that the trial judge erred by letting a second victim of his testify. Prosecutors have indicated they will again try to convict him of child molestation.

Typically, bishops sit idly by during such efforts. SNAP, however, wants new Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz to use all his resources (archdiocesan newspaper, church bulletins, websites and personal appeals) to prod others that witnessed or experienced Clark’s crimes to come forward and help prosecutors.
Under considerable public pressure, 15 bishops across the country have disclosed the identities of credibly accused abusive priests in their dioceses. SNAP wants Kurtz to do likewise, and to keep their names on his website permanently, so that families can be warned about these dangerous predators.
